One position is the Green River District Ranger overseeing the Visitor & Resource Protection Division on the Utah side of Dinosaur National Monument at Jensen, UT. One position is located in Grand Teton National Park in the Division of Visitor & Resource Protection reporting directly to Colter Bay District Ranger at Colter Bay, WY. MAJOR DUTIES: Major Duties: Supervise and lead complex law enforcement, all hazard, and search and rescue operations, as well as provide emergency medical services to park visitors and residents. Directly supervise permanent and seasonal staff. Participate in all aspects of employee supervision including performance planning and appraisals, employee recognition, and employee counseling. Set work goals prioritizing safety, utilize effective risk management principles, and ensure all employees receive required training. Conduct and supervise the detection of criminal activity, investigation of criminal violations, and affect custodial arrests in the monument. Identify operational requirements and make recommendations to your supervisor regarding programming, budgeting, training, administration and evaluation of operations. Work collaboratively with local and state agencies, partners, and internally with other park programs. Physical Demands: Work requires considerable physical exertion including longer periods of standing, walking, hiking, climbing in rough terrain, lifting or carrying equipment weighing over 50 pounds; the position at Dinosaur may include rowing oar-framed inflatable rafts through rapids up to class IV+ whitewater. Strenuous exertion is required in law enforcement, firefighting, search and rescue, medical and related emergency activities. Because of unpredictable emergency demands employee must be able to operate safely and effectively in extreme environmental conditions, sometimes for several days, in mountainous, desert and river valley terrain. Working Conditions: Some work is performed in an office setting; most of the work is performed outdoors. Work is performed at various hours of the day and night and for prolonged periods during emergencies. Frequently exposed to high risk and potential danger in law enforcement and emergency types of situations requiring use of a wide range of personal protective gear (some of which may be uncomfortable, hot, or inconvenient to wear), adherence to safety procedures, and other precautions. Patrol and emergency response operations may require prolonged exposure to hazardous conditions, high-risk situations and/or expose the employee to dangerous persons requiring use of a wide range of personal protective gear. Communications may be poor. Emergency law enforcement operations require entry into hazardous environments; exposure to dangerous persons, animals, and substances; and potential exposure to infectious diseases. This is a secondary-administrative law enforcement position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S. C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U. S. C. 8412 (d) (FERS). PLEASE NOTE: Applicants may meet qualification requirements, but may not be eligible for special retirement coverage. If such an applicant is selected, they will be placed in the regular retirement system. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under CSRS, an employee must transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under FERS, an employee must: 1) transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position, AND 2) complete 3 years of service in a primary rigorous position including any such service during which no FERS deductions were withheld, AND 3) must be continuously employed in a secondary position(s) since moving from a primary rigorous position, except for any break in employment from a secondary position that began with involuntary separation (not for cause).
